Overview
The Sunny Island
5048U is a bidirectional inverter (battery inverter and charger) for stand-alone systems.
The Sunny Island 5048U supplies loads on the stand-alone grid side (protected loads
panel) and charges battery banks with power that is provided by a wide range of AC
or DC sources simultaneously. The Sunny Island 5048U can manage AC power
sources that are coupled on the AC input/output side, a direct input from a generator
or utility, or a DC power source that is coupled to the DC input/output side. The ability
to support AC and DC coupling, and the wide variety of system configurations
supported make the Sunny Island 5048U the most flexible inverter/charger available
today.
Industry Leading Efficiency
Thanks to innovative SMA technology, the Sunny Island 5048U achieves a maximum
efficiency of more than 95 %. Optimized for operation under partial load, the
efficiency peaks at about 15 % of rated power and remains high throughout the power
curve. The Sunny Island 5048U also features very low consumption when idle or in
standby mode. Due to the high overload capabilities and the integrated output
management, there is no need to oversize the Sunny Island.
Multiple Grid Configurations Supported
The Sunny Island 5048U supports parallel operation of up to four inverters on a single
phase system, up to four inverters on a split phase system, or three invertes on a threephase
system. This flexibility enables the Sunny Island 5048U to setup stand-alone
power supplies with outputs ranging from 3 kW to 26 kW. Please refer to the example
system diagrams on pages 17 and 18.
Automatic Generator Control
The Sunny Island 5048U can automatically start and stop the generator depending on
battery state of charge or consumer power demands. The Sunny Island 5048U will also
protect the generator from overloading by limiting the amount of current it draws based
on the GnCurNom parameter setting. The Sunny Island 5048U can also provide up to
5 kvar of reactive power in the generator/grid circuit depending on battery SOC and
AC load requirements to improve generator/grid power factor.
Sophisticated Battery Management
The intelligent battery management precisely records the battery's state of charge. This
enables improved utilization of battery capacity, which also means that smaller, more
cost-effective batteries can be used without affecting performance. In order to prevent
premature aging caused by incorrect charging and frequent deep discharge, the Sunny
Island 5048U has an intelligent charge control and reliable deep discharge protection.When these functions are properly used, the battery service life can be greatly
extended in comparison with simpler devices. The Sunny Island 5048U can also
automatically shed less critical loads to extend availablity when off grid.
Easy Installation, Configuration
Despite the complex function of this battery inverter, the Sunny Island 5048U is easy to
configure. All the settings required for operation can be quickly and easily programmed
in ten steps using the "Quick Configuration Guide". In a system with multiple Sunny
Islands, the system is programmed and operated using a "Single Point of Operation".
The system/cluster parameters are only set on the master device, and all other devices
automatically adopt the configuration. The easy-to-understand menu navigation allows
quick access to all important data, even while the system is running.
Integrated Data Logging
An MMC/SD card allows storage of system parameters, data acquisition, event
logging, and is extremely valuable when trying to determine the cause of error
messages.

Communication
The Sunny Island 5048U can be connected in 1-phase, split phase or a 3-phase system
with other Sunny Island 5048U devices. The devices communicate with each other
through an RJ45 communication cable.
